Print on Film: Citizen Hearst Documentary

I just watched the trailer for Citizen Hearst, and now I’m chomping at the bit to see it! The film tells the story of William Randolph Hearst, the media giant and patriarch of the 125-year-old Hearst Corporation (they’re the folks responsible for Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, Cosmopolitan, Esquire, Town & Country, and hundreds of other magazine, newspaper, broadcasting, and digital brands, for all you non media nerds).

Narrated by actor William H. Macy, the film features interviews with Hearst CEOs, editors, and celebrities, as well as footage behind the glass walls of Hearst Tower in New York and inside the grand walls of Hearst Castle in California.

The documentary’s title is a riff on Citizen Kane, the 1941 Academy Award-winning drama directed by and starring Orson Welles as publishing tycoon Charles Foster Kane, a character based in part on W. R. Hearst and the highs and lows of his media empire.

Citizen Hearst premiered in early October at the Hamptons International Film Festival, and my fingers and toes are crossed in hopes it makes the rounds to my local theater (I’m talking to you, SLFS).

I’m a sucker for seersucker, so it was love at first sight when I spotted these Kim Seybert seersucker napkins. I immediately began daydreaming about summer barbecues and al fresco dinner parties–but, in truth, I’d set the table with these any time of year.

Kim Seybert’s cool napkins don’t end with seersucker–her website features a slew of other styles, including these equally chic anchor and ombre napkins, as well as napkin rings, placemats, chargers, and other tabletop items.

If you read my spotlight this week on the blog Linz, Linz, Linz (thank you, Lindesy!) you now know that one of my favorite quotes comes from one of my favorite books, Through the Looking Glass, by Lewis Carroll:

The full quote goes like this:

“There’s no use trying,” said Alice. “One can’t believe impossible things.”

“I daresay you haven’t had much practice,” said the Queen. “When I was your age I always did it for half-an-hour a day. Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.”

I am definitely not a morning person (I’m pretty worthless before a cup of coffee), but I do love the idea of setting aside free time during the day, whether its five minutes or half-an-hour as the Queen of Hearts suggests, to daydream and let your imagination run wild.

As if I needed one more reason to love Rebecca Minkoff, last week the handbag and fashion designer went and launched a line of jewelry. A few months back I bought my first Rebecca Minkoff bag, a M.A.C. clutch, and I haven’t removed it from my shoulder since. Something tells me that Minkoff’s necklaces, bracelets, rings and earrings (featuring pave stones and geometric shapes, and offered in 18K gold, rose gold, and stainless steel) will soon become permanent fixtures in my wardrobe, too.

She recently told Elle.com, “One of my first activities when I wake up in the morning is piling my jewelry on, so I created a collection that allows you to do just that… I’m encouraging people to layer the pieces and create a look that personalizes their style.”

I’m one of those people who feel naked leaving the house without an armful of bracelets, a pair of earrings, and a ring (or three). Which is probably why some pieces I never take off: A delicate gold Gorjana astrology charm dangles from my neck at all times, but Minkoff’s new zodiac necklaces could give the Gorjana gem a run for its money.

Long Live Summer and Lizzie Fortunato

It’s officially fall, but for me the carefree, sun-drenched days of summer live on–in the form of Lizzie Fortunato accessories.

I stumbled across Lizzie Fortunato’s spring/summer 2012 collection, and I’m kicking myself for not discovering it sooner. Inspired by mid-century SoCal architecture, the Italian leather clutches with geometric embroidery, enamel cuffs, and embellished necklaces are Coachella-chic at it’s finest.

I think these pieces could transition quite nicely into fall, don’t you? Better late than never!

Old English: Belstaff is Back

I’ve long had a love affair with leather motorcycle jackets, bomber jackets, army jackets, pea coats–you name it. (It’s no wonder fall is my favorite season.) So the tomboy in me geeked out after reading that Belstaff was making a comeback.

Born in the 1920s, the British brand is best known for motorsport gear and accessories–think waterproof jackets, goggles, gloves–and was a favorite label of motorcycle enthusiasts (not surprisingly, two of Belstaff’s classic jacket styles are named Roadmaster and Triumph).

But the latest goods to come out of the house of Belstaff are more than just highly functional (a girl can never have too many pockets), they’re also highly fashionable–think sleek leather moto jackets, plush shearling vests, slick waxed cotton jackets, and posh cashmere pea coats with all the proper trimmings: shiny metal hardware, horn buttons, belts, buckles, zippers.

Hells to the Yes: Loeffler Randall Introduces Handbags

I’ve been a Loeffler Randall fan since falling for their skull ballet flats a few years back. Punk-y and pretty? Hook, line, sinker.

So I was stoked when I read that the label was launching a line of handbags. And much like their shoes, the bags are stylish but understated, fun but fuss-free.

My favorite style is the Rider, designed for girls on the go: the classic satchel silhouette features a back strap that buckles to a bike basket or handlebars, so your purse will stay put while pedaling.
